Tokyo Ravens

53229lNatsume (CV: Kana Hanazawa) and her cousin Harutora (CV: Kaito Ishikawa) are both children of great onmyou users and are from the Tsuchimikado family. Harutora from the branch family is supposed to be the shikigami of Natsume’s, as she’s from the main family, but Harutora isn’t actually a spirit seer. However, Natsume unlocks his path to the onmyoudou and he starts attending the same school as Natsume to learn about it together with his friend Touji Ato (CV: Ryouhei Kimura), and becomes friends with Kyouko Kurahashi (CV: Eri Kitamura), Tenma Momoe (CV: Hiro Shimono) and Suzuka Dairenji (CV: Ayane Sakura). Together with Harutora’s shikigami Kon, these children learn the truth about Yakou Tsuchimikado, whom Natsume is said to be the reincarnation of.

Where’s the mystery in this one? In the beginning, pretty much as soon as Yakou’s reincarnation was mentioned I was like “It gotta be Harutora.”. Not once was I confused about it or led to believe differently, and I was right. Harutora is indeed the reincarnation of Yakou and the son of the main family of Tsuchimikado (I admit I didn’t see that coming until it was revealed the main family did indeed give birth to a boy). The characters have more or less no development. It’s like all of them girls falls in love with Harutora and the guys are just the same through the entire show. I still don’t see the point of Tenma in the show. Is he just there to balance out the amount of guys in the gang, because it’d be too little with just Harutora and Touji, when there’s Kyouko, Suzuka, Natsume and Kon?

The animation was decent. For most part it was well done (and the spiders scared the shit out of me), but once in a while there were seconds with low quality animation with I reacted to. Every. Single. Time. It was just such a sudden drop in quality I just couldn’t let it pass. Over all it was still good.

The background music by the I’ve Sound composer Maiko Iuchi on itself is good and it’s fitting the show, but I really had to listen through the soundtrack a few times afterwards to get an opinion. I did notice the music once in a while during the show (there are some really pretty piano tunes in there), but nothing is very memorable. I have a few favourite, which gets my attention, but most of it just end up being background music which I just suddenly realize I didn’t react to at all.

It’s average is 3, while I’d give it an overall of 3.5, because while there were a lot of things you could have done better, I enjoyed it now and then. (And the spider-like things did scare me. Although, maybe I should give minus for that?)
