Batch #18: Mystery BL

It’s been a while since I posted a batch. Or anything at all. It’s not been a lot of posts this year, but here is another one nonetheless and it’s not SVSSS, although I will post reviews of volumes 3 and 4 sooner rather than later.

Believe it or not, mystery and crime are honestly my fav genres, aside from historical fiction, so it’s probably odd I don’t write about more mystery titles. But I’m here to share my thoughts on a few of different flavours today!

These are all available on BiliBili because it’s currently my go-to for webcomics. I guess I’m mostly into manhua right now in terms of comics. Lol.

Psychomania
When Ming Shu is out shipping clothes there’s suddenly a hostage situation at the library. He hurries over to find a woman willing to exchange for the hostage and it’s his chance to apprehend the criminal. The case is straightforward and not for his unit to handle. They, instead, handle a different murder after Ming Shu and his roommate and childhood friend Xiao Yu’an stumble upon a corpse.

This is based on a novel, and I think it maybe covers just one arc? I haven’t actually read the novel so it’s hard to say. Either way, it seems to be finished because the end was strangely rushed and it didn’t feel like it was the end of the story, just an arc. What I do know is that it’s based on the sequel to another novel, and we get to see flashbacks to what happened in that one, I believe.

It wasn’t the greatest, but I found the mystery very interesting nonetheless and the art was generally good. And who can really say no to gay policemen?

Batch #17: BL Webcomics

I know I’ve said the nest post was supposed to be The Living Waters, but I’ve been unwell and tired these past months, and haven’t had the energy to finish the review. It’s felt like a heavy weight on my shoulders, even, which doesn’t help when I need a nap every few hours to get by. So I wanted to do something easy, hence a batch post! The theme is BL webcomics that are adaptations of Chinese novels I’ve read. Or, you know, BL webcomics. AGAIN.

On a different note, I had a poll on Twitter about tags a while ago. I asked if I should add genre and/or age tags. Genre tags seemed to be a given, but age tags I was a bit hmm on. Since I’ve already had so many posts and I work on this site entirely on my own, I can’t do any major addition or changes like this in the tagging system after this, so I’ve decided to only add genre tags. Demographics and the like won’t be a tag. I apologise to anyone who anted them, but as usual, I’ll be writing its content is unsuitable for a younger audience.

Fake Slackers
The two school tyrants of the east and west building — whose exams score place first and second from the bottom, coincidentally meet for the first time in a street fight during summer break. When the second year begins, the students of class 2-3 are terrified out of their minds, because the violent tyrants are in the same class. Not only that… their seats end up being next to each other! They are surely going to fight! But appearances are not always as they seem…

I love the novel this has been adapted from. I’ve read Fake Slackers 3 or 4 times in a year, I think. So, you know, I really love this one. It’s currently on hiatus, which isn’t a problem for me because I’ve already read the story so much I know it pretty much by heart. But I could see how it would be frustrating to others, especially since it’s pretty much at the very beginning of the story. I think the art is really good and the way how the people in the app get chibi characters is so nice. The translation seems slightly iffy, though, with some variations in screen names and so on.

You can read Fake Slackers on BiliBili, and I’ll try to get a review of the novel up sooner or later.

Batch #16: Webcomics

This is the second of two BiliBili Comics focused batches, meaning it’s the continuation from last week. With this batch, I’ve covered all the genres they’ve listed. You can read some basic stuff about BiliBili Comics in my Reading Platforms Master Post.

If you’re interested in a similar batch, let me know what platform(s), and I’ll dig into it very happily. Free options are easier, but not necessary, though, more importantly, I prefer something not yet listed on the apps in the Master Post, so I can expand it.

The Martial Emperor’s Life After Seclusion
Ling Ge comes from a different world, and though he never had a master, his martial arts abilities quickly grew and became amazing. However, he went into seclusion 10 years ago after defeating invaders of Eastern China. Now he’s been lured out by a girl who wanted to join a sect, and, to protect her, he joined as well, pretending not to be as strong as he truly is. But before long, it seems trouble is knocking on his door, and by dealing with that, he ended up inviting more.

I have to admit I had no positive expectations on this because it’s a harem manhua, but I was not only pretty pleasantly surprised — I enjoy that he’s canonically a feminine-looking guy. It annoys me that the girls have determined that he’s a pervert, even though he’s far from bad in any way, and I swear, those girls are far more perverted than he is. Far from a favourite series, but I like it.

Batch #15: Webcomics

I promised another batch a while ago. This isn’t a BL batch, but rather a batch of some comics on BiliBili Comics, the international site for BiliBili, and is the first out of two. For these batches, I tried to pick titles to cover every genre they have listed. Since they seem to have some a tag system, though, I can’t guarantee that if one looks through all genres one by one, there will be at least one I’ve reviewed. I used the tags when I found something to check the genre off, out of convenience.

Worth noting is that BiliBili, instead of hunting down scanlations to have the removed and make the groups stop, contacting them about their translations, and I hear they compensated the groups for them (and pay those who continue while working for them). This is not the first time a publisher has picked up a fan translation, but it’s novel to see it at a larger scale, as with BiliBili Comics. Some of these may be a bit of varying quality, from the looks of it with some name variations. Another note is that they’re all free.

I’ve added BiliBili Comics to my Reading Platform Master Post, but I only have access to the site, so if anyone can fill me in the information I don’t have, that would be great!

My Young Lady is a NEET
Gu Yuan is hired to prepare Li Su for her marriage with Han Qingyang to connect the family businesses. But he is shocked to find out that the young lady lives in a pigsty and won’t even enter the sun. Now he has to transform this NEET to a prim and proper, but it seems like an impossible task.

At first this story is just comedy and missing a bit of the romance in romcom, but that comes later. I had no expectations and I’m glad, because it’s a pretty funny series. I enjoy they characters’ development as individuals too and that might be the main reason I like it. The comedy is just a great bonus, and the romance is pretty sweet too.

Heaven Official’s Blessing

If you don’t know how to continue living, then live for me. If you don’t know what meaning there is continuing to live, then for now, please use me as your reason to live, and treat me as your pillar to support you in life.

He was born under a lucky star, yet after ascending to godhood at a young age, everything seemed to go entirely against him. Reading Platforms Master Post

Note: This post will be updated continuously. It’s not as thorough as I want it to be, but I wanted to publish it more than I wanted to wait until my second hip dislocation was fully healed (and potentially get stuck in bed for another month or two in case i have the same injury again). It’ll be updated very soon, assuming I can sit more than a few minutes without severe pain.

Not only is today’s post late, but also a little different. I don’t really talk about parenting on this blog, since it’s not the focus, nor do I usually make posts that target parents or other legal guardians.

Well, today that is exactly what this post is about. Well, it’s targeting parents to keep their kids safe, so it sort of touches on parenting.

This post came to be during a bout of insomnia (which I still suffer from) when I went into a webnovel/webcomic binge (which I’m still in). I decided to explore different platforms, considering making some batch posts covering them. This was all fine and dandy until I came across a platform with highly questionable content, with users mentioning their young ages. My worry, as a parent, for these kids (who clearly need a lesson in internet safety themselves) led me to the decision to make a post covering all platforms I can find and access (and understand!)… and here we are. Batch #14: Boys Love

Here we got a third BL webcomic batch! Sort of odd to drop that on White Day, but that happens when you need to throw something in. My obsession with gay men has been lasting quite a long while by now, strangely enough. Some of these are on the more mature side, but I’ll add my NSFA rating for each. This time the stories can be found on Tapas.

Eyes on Me (by loonytwin)
Evan forgets his keys at a friend’s house. His friend’s not going to be home, but, as his roommate’s home, Evan can get his keys anyway. Only, the roommate was hotter than he expected. But is the cute guy interested in him too, or just playing around?

This one was pretty good at the beginning, but I lost interested after a while. I guess it simply lost its momentum and fell flat after the main ship more or less fully set sail. The art’s really nice, and I didn’t really mind the mature parts. I’d still put it somewhere around 4.5/10 on the NSFA scale. The handling of pacing oneself in a relationship has been good though, so I’ll give it that. Not the greatest one in this batch.

The Sound of Your Voice

Ethan Hyun is the team leader of an editor team at Sam Publishing and is a very nerdy person. He loves comics, games, animated shows, figurines and recently he’s been into audio dramas. And better yet! He’s going to work with his favourite voice actor, Jimmy Kwak, after the company decides to publish an audio drama based on a book they’re published! But their first meeting was horrible, as Ethan injured Jimmy while on the train, and Jimmy thought he’s stalking him. Soon, however, they get along and when life almost throws them both onto the street, they end up living together and learn more about one another.

Batch #13: Boys Love

Here we got a second BL webtoon batch with titles from Toomics! I haven’t gotten tired of men falling for each other, so bear with me. I promise I’ll post something else… eventually. I just need my romance fix every once in a while, and BL, GL, fantasy romance and dark/bittersweet romances tend to hit home better than the average shoujo romance (but needless to say Kimi ni Todoke and Ao Haru Ride remains my favourite romance titles to date.)

I Like You (by Momopia)
Andy Goh always ends up bullied at his school and he recently changed schools because of it. Of course, some boys make him their gofer and make him pay for their drinks and food, but as long as he keeps doing it, he’ll be fine. Right? But it’s while he’d hurrying back to the classroom he accidentally sees Jesse Baek confess to the mathematics teacher that he loves him. In desperation, Andy says he likes Jesse and somehow, for some reason, the two ends up being a couple. How will Andy get out of this mess now? How will he break up with the school’s top dog?

There are only 21 chapters so far in English, so this is very much a first impression kind of thing, but this is pretty darn funny. Bullying aside, that is. And the shitty math teacher. And Jesse’s tendency to not respect boundaries, but he doesn’t seem to take any hints that Andy doesn’t like the guy (and it’s pretty obvious why, when you read it). Er… Wait… Why is this funny? I guess most of the jokes just hit home and the teenagers are very much teens. So maybe it’s kind of cringe funny? I don’t know. This is set in a boys’ school so for once it fucking makes sense there are like no girls! It bothers me when I read BL and for some unexplainable reason, girls/women don’t exist. Another thing I do appreciate is that Andy does notice that Jesse isn’t as terrible as he thinks and that he isn’t going “I ONLY LIKE GIRLS!” but instead has a moment when he goes “Wait, but I never liked a girl either!” It’s completely unrelated to my general opinion on this webcomic, but I can appreciate seeing a demi-romantic-ish character that isn’t supposed to like one or the other specifically every once in a while.

Batch #12: Boys Love

First, sorry. This intro will be super long. Keep reading to know why. Or just skip down, if you don’t want to.

I had a poll a while ago on my Twitter about a BL webtoon batch because I was in a BL mood. It took me a while, but I finally got around to read enough to actually make a batch. I know not everyone who reads my blog is interested in same-sex romance, so I while I do want to feature more of this (like GL) and perhaps more LGBTQ+ fiction in general, I don’t want to spam people who definitely don’t like it.

That said, I plan on making another BL webtoon batch soon. As an early apology for that, I’ve added a Toomics VIP membership review at the end.

And now I’d like to make this (not at all) tiny announcement: I have actually started to write BL romance. No, I’m kidding. I’m actually (technically speaking) writing a straight romance, but that’s not the point.

Those who follow me on Twitter might already know, but I launched a web novel almost 2 weeks ago – the Wednesday after my last post. I chose to share it in this batch because, well… People let me know way back when Mini was going to be born that they wanted updates on my life. It’s not about Mini, but it’ll likely affect my blogging anyway. The other reason is that it’s LGBTQ+ themed, so it’s not that far off. The (technically straight) romance isn’t the point, but it’s in there. Also, there are definitely not straight romances in there. Like a BL couple I ship. And a headcanon couple which is totally not happening in the story.

I’m letting you know partly to market (let’s face it, it ends up being marketing the moment I mention it, even if it’s lousy marketing) and mostly because I might choose to change my blogging schedule – either the content I plan on writing about or the frequency (or both).

I also have made a poll which I’d love you to vote on. It’s both on the home page (to the left on PC, but if you use a phone it’s below the posts), and here:

Let me know your thoughts about the matter, folks!

I hope you’ll continue to support me though, and this blog is my baby so I won’t give it up. And I have no plans on getting any nicer just because I’m a kinda published creative writer now. I’m as critical of shitty stuff as I’ve always been because I’ve always been a creative writer too.

Now, please enjoy this batch. And I want to remind you about the Toomics review at the end. Let me know if you have any other services (or themes/genres) you’d like me to review. If you know me before the end of the month I can review any titles on Toomics (that are not 18+). And as always, free stuff is linked to, while paid stuff I can’t profit from is not. I’m such a bitch. But all can be found on Toomics anyway.
