The only goal Ling Chen has in life is to kill Ye Zimu. That is it. However, because Ye Zimu has superpowers and acts as a hero, it’s not the easiest thing to do for a regular-guy-turned-villain. Then, one day, Ling Chen finds himself returned to his 17-year-old self, before it all began, before the superpowers, before the path of vengeance and loathing. He’s naturally still determined to kill Ye Zimu, who he hates with a passion, but now that his life hasn’t lost all meaning yet… does he really need to?
This is a supernatural story with superpowers, comedy, school life, vengeance… and friendship? It’s a really fascinating story that’s extremely well-made. At first Ling Chen’s goal seems so superficial. He just doesn’t like Ye Zimu, and he gives the vibes that his vengeance and loathing are over something super petty, and Ling Chen is just evil for the sake of it. But the character isn’t that simple, and he also has one of the greatest character arcs I’ve seen, and I love his development in this one.
While it has a lot of plot, I would still say it’s very character-driven as it’s a lot about the character arcs and each individual. Still, sometimes it’s the plot that drives it forward, which just shows the pacing’s well done because it can shift, and the plot itself has never been abandoned to the point I’ve read so far.
I absolutely enjoy this one. It’s great to have a villain protagonist, but the humour is also on-point with his lighter and darker beats, which suits me really well. Out of the ones I’ve read from Bilibili so far, this might just be one of my absolute favourites.
2025 addition: When I was going to post this former batch entry again, I was so excited about working on the review again that I just made nonsense noises for a while. This was absolutely one of my favourite stories on Bilibili Comics before the license expired. It might have been right beneath Heaven Official’s Blessing, and not by that far, despite the fact I adore HOB so much I can’t describe it. I love this one.
But! I didn’t write it then, possibly because I hadn’t read that far yet, but it gets really dark sometimes, and I can’t in good conscience recommend it to people. Some of the panels are literally visually disturbing, so don’t read it if you can’t stomach it. Read it entirely at your own risk.
