Time to Read:

Xiao Yu’an got terminally ill and, at the end of his life, he chose to read webnovels to pass the time. Just before he passed away, he commented on one of them… only to wake up as the villain of the story he just finished?! To ensure he avoided certain death, Xiao Yu’an tried to treat Yan Heqing, the male lead, well, while saving many people… But it appears that the universe itself might actually be working against him…
Also known as How to Survive as a Villain (which is so much shorter!), I actually reviewed this specific webcomic adaptation of Yi Yi Yi Yi’s novel a year ago, but now the story is finished with only the extras left, so consider this my final thoughts on the manhua adaptation.
At the time, it was the best one that I reviewed that day, but today it’s the worst one. After a while, the story got extremely repetitive and while I don’t mind a clueless character, the lack of communication as well as the plot repeatedly doing the same thing over and over again between the two… It wasn’t all that good, unsurprisingly.
I’ve been reading the novel since sometime in mid-2021. What I can say now that I didn’t know then is that this is considerably less dark than the original and there are some significant differences that we might want to consider. Something from the novel that I kind of miss is the parents trying to hook Xiao Yu’an up with someone, failing and it’s kind of like “Is he asexual???”, which makes me laugh even now. In the manhua, however, we don’t get to know much about Xiao Yu’an’s life before he reincarnated.
I wouldn’t recommend this one, unless you want to see the “villain” and male lead do the same things over, and over, and over, and over for over a hundred chapters. Pick up something better, such as The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System and since I love to hate Scum Villain, please do think about what that actually means for How to Survive as a Villain.
This was originally part of a batch post and has been edited somewhat to work as a stand-alone post before it was reposted again on August 10, 2024. Additionally, since the reviews, Monogatari Novels has obtained print licensing of the series, so if you really are curious, you can buy it in print nowadays too.
