Xian Chan Nu

Time to Read:

1–2 minutes

The young lady of the Liu family, Liu Shiqing, doesn’t act the way she’s expecte to. Because she grew up with her father leading armed escorts, she’s not able to stay cooped inside all day, no matter how much her father tells her to do so. One day the men are escorting a certain thing, and Liu Shiqing sneaks into the escort and nearly gets kidnapped. However, a handsome young master in white kills the bandit with a single attack and then leaves. The impression on Liu Shiqing makes her want to find her saviour. Little does she know she’s about to end up amid mystery and forces one should not play around with.

Just want to point out that this is GL, so no one gets an unpleasant surprise if you’re uncomfortable with that. I don’t read as much GL as I would like, perhaps because I seldom find a story that I like. Anyway, this is a pretty interesting story involving demons, past loves, present love, vengeance and one handsome lady, which I can’t stop looking it, ngl.

    • I think you didn’t read what I wrote correctly, which may be because the post is really short (because I was originally just one paragraph), or because English is my thord language, or because the phrasing I used is acceptable where I’m from and in my circles, but not where you’re from and/or your circles.

I don’t disdain baihe, or GL, just like I don’t disdain hetero romances. However, I recognise that not all people are comfortable with all content. Het romances aren’t for everyone, BL isn’t for everyone, and GL isn’t for everyone. Because I cover a lot of men loving men or stories with hetero ships, I had pointed out in the review I originally wrote that it was GL because it was outside of the usual scope of ny reviews, and kept that because it was still relevant.. I don’t think not being comfortable with reading something is a disdain of something either — it’s about what you’re comfortable consuming and making informed choices of your reading and other media. Acknowledging that oneself or others do not like everything and especially when a forum (in this case a site with reviews) has an emphasis on certain media, and primarily turns to consumers of that media, brings up different kinds, it’s important to acknowledge this. That someone is uncomfortable with a genre is not a negative or dislike of real life people who, in this case, are feminine people who love feminine people (to speak broadly), but simply a matter of not feeling comfortable consuming media. Saying someone can’t be a danmei lover while also being uncomfortable reading baihe is, to me, like saying you can’t love cosy mystery if you also don’t like Nordic Noir — someone who loves danmei might for instance be a gay masc person who relates to masc characters a lot and when trying to relate to femme characters they get uncomfortable, and that’s perfectly fine. They might not like consuming media of women loving women, but it doesn’t invalidate their personal opinion, just like it doesn’t make them any less gay if they only are comfortable ready men loving men. Now, if they were to, say, toss a GL book in the garbage because they accidentally picked it up and didn’t look into it, that’s a fault with them as a person, but acknowledging discomfort of a certain genre is not.

Or, if you want me to make a personal comparison, I don’t go around telling people to get rid of all sexual content even though I personally get super icky about it. I could choose to never read it too, which of course would limit ll I read by quite a lot, and I would in fact avoid almost all BL in favour of nothing due to a rather large percentage of BL being sexual in content, had it not been for the fact I do reviews. I would have missed out on my fav books, sure, but I would also not be as uncomfortable as I end up being a lot of the time. I can acknowledge that I don’t like reading about sex. It doesn’t make me, as a person disgusted by people liking it, or the act itself. For most people who have the same issue, I generally suggest not to read the content that make you uncomfortable regardless of why, unless they either do it knowing that it will give them discomfort or if they’re in a field that requires it.

So, to answer the question, why would it be unpleasant? There are myriads of reasons why, but none of them are invalid, as long as they don’t invalidate people who do like the content they are uncomfortable with. Both types of people can coexist in a space and that’s fine. And should be fine and accepted from all within that space for it to be a healthy environment. There’s nothing wrong with people of different comfort levels of different content to be within one space. But I can’t tell you exactly why someone wouldn’t be comfortable with it any more than I can explain why I’m allergic to cashews. That’s just part of life. The upside is that at least they shouldn’t be getting anaphylaxis by reading GL, so they’ll survive even if they get uncomfortable, while a cashew gives me a severe allergic reaction. And that’s good! The fact they could consume it, if they really want it or accidentally do, not the anaphylaxis because of cashews, I mean.

I’m sorry for the confusion that was caused, and I’m happy to know you’ve enjoyed my reviews up to this point, and truly hopes this clarified aby misunderstandings about the post itself but also hopefully makes ot clear that I accept that people are complex individuals and no single mold can fit all fans of one genre. I hope you will make a choice of whether to continue reading my reviews in the future or not based on what makes you most comfortable based on above and how you have enjoyed my content. Thank you again for reading my reviews so far and thanks for the comment.
