Before I can speak, this person asks me, their voice trembling, “Why are you here?”
“I am lost,” I say. “I don’t know where to go or whence I came. Can you show me the way?” I pause. “Or could it be that you have been here for so long you have forgotten to find your way out? Why are you here?”
Thoughts
The quote above is from the short journalling entry I wrote as I played the micro solo journalling game Here, through the dark.
I tried it twice because on one hand, it’s a very short game, and on the other, the first session was awful. I didn’t really get anywhere.
During the second run, my rolls were a little better, and I felt there was actual progress. So it can really be a coin toss, I think. I did write more for the journalling part the second time too, but I don’t think that would have changed much.
The game itself just comes with prompts with no list of needed materials or guides for how to play, which is fine, but can make it a little difficult to play if you end up in a situation where you just go in a circles. Which, I mean, is what being lost is, but still.
But what you need to play it is 1 d4, 1 d6, some free time, and preferably a scrap paper. If you want to actual journal, however format you choose to journal it in, include whatever your write with and on.
The scrap paper is just to draw up your path. That helped me get a sense of moevement.
Did I like it? Not really. But the concept itself isn’t bad. I think it would have benefitted from giving just a line or two of guidance though.
